As I shared in my previous post, I’m about to embark on a year-long exploration of different religions. I am seeking to understand them through lived experience, and not just from the textbooks that I spent the last year studying. It is time to live them.
To guide me on this adventure, I’ve established ten personal guidelines:
- Prioritize safety and well-being, engaging with respect and cultural sensitivity.
- Practice as a typical believer, not a religious leader, focusing on prayer, meditation, holidays, and uplifting rituals.
- Approach with an open mind and genuine curiosity, seeking to understand from the perspective of its followers.
- Focus on the positive aspects, while acknowledging and learning from any past harms.
- Read and contemplate the primary scripture and religious texts, reflecting on their teachings.
- Use this journey for personal growth and self-discovery.
- Adapt my approach, focusing on aspects that feel meaningful or relevant.
- Be mindful of potential ethical dilemmas and consider alternative ways to engage.
- Keep a journal to document experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
- Share experiences and insights with others, if comfortable, to foster dialogue and understanding.
Starting tomorrow, I will begin this journey by immersing myself in the world of Buddhism. With its emphasis on mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance, it seems like a fitting place to start. The teachings of the Buddha offer a path to inner peace and understanding, which I believe will provide a solid foundation for exploring other faiths throughout the year. I’m particularly drawn to the concept of non-attachment, which could help me navigate the complexities of different belief systems without getting too caught up in any one.
So, with a beginner’s mind and an open heart, I look forward to exploring the teachings of the Buddha and embarking on this month-long exploration of Buddhism.
