Resolutions from a crisis.

By Brock

There’s something intoxicating about a fresh start. That clean slate feeling, the adventure, new possibilities, the thrill of stepping into the unknown. For some of us, like me, that buzz isn’t limited to January 1st. We find fresh starts tucked away in every corner: the excitement of starting a new week every Monday, new projects, and the magic of the midlife crisis. But what happens when your meticulously planned year of growth gets shaken up by the cosmic equivalent of a rogue asteroid? Well, my friends, that’s when the real power of new beginnings reveals itself.

Last year, my mantra was “maintain.” I had a career I loved, a solid routine, and a life bubbling with joy. I was coasting on waves of stability, diligently tending to the garden of my well-being. Then, BAM! Life, that sneaky little magician, pulled a fast one. We both lost our jobs, we lost our dog, my carefully curated routine evaporated like morning mist, and suddenly, “maintain” seemed like a cruel joke.

That’s when I learned an invaluable lesson: sometimes, new beginnings aren’t pretty bows tied around neatly wrapped packages. They can be messy, unexpected, and downright terrifying. But they’re also opportunities to rewrite the script, to shed the outgrown skin of our old lives, and to emerge, transformed, into something stronger and more resilient.

This year, my word isn’t “maintain, It’s “heal.” Heal my body, battered by the stress of studying for two PhD degrees. Heal my mind, swirling with anxieties and loss. Heal my spirit, bruised by the unexpected detour. Heal my relationships, tested by the shared storm of uncertainty. Heal my life, cracked and chipped by the weight of change.

“Heal” doesn’t just mean bubble baths and meditation—though those are welcome—it means active, conscious rebuilding. It means facing my fears head-on, exploring new career paths, nurturing my creativity, and reconnecting with the things that bring me joy. It means embracing the vulnerability that comes with starting over, and trusting that the universe, even when it throws curveballs, has a way of guiding us towards something amazing.

This, my friends, is the true power of new beginnings. They’re not just about shiny new notebooks and resolutions scribbled in glitter. They’re about the grit, the resilience, the courage to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and say, “I can heal this.”

So, whether your new beginning is a Monday morning, a career change, or a journey of healing like mine, remember this: every fresh start is a chance to rise stronger, wiser, and more open to the incredible possibilities that life has in store. Let’s embrace the messy, the unexpected, and the downright terrifying, because it’s in the crucible of change that we truly discover who we are and what we’re capable of.

I love this. I’ve always enjoyed new beginnings but for some reason the obligatory new year resolutions have been frustrating. It’s the expectation of being perfect for the whole year—something my ADHD never allowed me to do. But I love the idea of a word. Just a word to focus on for the year. I’ll have to give that some thought. Thank you for sharing. ❤️
