Daily Delights – Pennies, Chickadees, Lizard Tag, and Matzo Ball Miracles

It has been an adventurous few weeks, from profound Passover celebrations, to quick trips to Aruba. It is easy to get caught up in the movement of life. Deadlines loom, responsibilities pile up, and sometimes, the magic of everyday existence fades into the background. These last few weeks, I’ve been purposefully slowing down, taking a breath, and trying to take special notice of the many things that delight me. appreciating the little delights that sprinkle joy throughout our days. These seemingly insignificant moments, the ones that might otherwise go unnoticed, hold a surprising power to brighten our spirits and remind us of the beauty in the ordinary.

Pennies

One such delight arrived in the most unexpected way – a handful of pennies spread carefully under our doormat. I was cleaning the patio when I first discovered them. After a quick Google search I discover it was a prosperity charm. Someone must have known we have been job hunting. There’s something undeniably heartwarming about the gesture itself. It’s a silent offering of good luck, a tiny act of kindness that speaks volumes about the giver’s intentions. It doesn’t matter if it’s a whispered prayer sent our way, flowers on the doorstep, or a few lucky pennies – these little acts of well-wishing remind us that we’re not alone in this journey. There’s a network of invisible threads connecting us, a silent symphony of support and goodwill playing out in the background of our lives.

Chickadees

Another source of daily joy comes in the form of a feathered friend. Every morning, perched somewhere in our patio area, a happy little bird treats us to delightful whistles. I assume it is a Carolina Chickadee. Its melodic noises are a burst of sunshine. While I work at my computer, their noises are the perfect accompaniment to the tedious typing. A small wonder from a little song.

Iguana be Kidding Me

This week also brought a burst of unexpected excitement in the form of a high-speed lizard chase. We took a quick weekend trip to Aruba. While relaxing by the pool, I was treated to a heart-pounding spectacle – two lizards, engaged in a frantic chase that took them all over the swimming pool area. As if in slow motion, their miniature reptilian race came to a screeching halt right in front of me. One ran under the chair, while the other stopped to stare at me. We locked eyes, he gave me a couple of “back off” nods and then he also ran right towards me. I may have had a little heart attack, then I burst out laughing.

Matzo Ball Miracles

Perhaps the most delightful moment, however, involved a hilarious misunderstanding and a neighbor with a heart of gold. In a text gone wrong, my neighbor misinterpreted the message and thought we were inviting her to a Passover Seder…in 20 minutes! Now, most people might politely decline and move on. But not this amazing woman! In a whirlwind of culinary creativity, she whipped up a pot of homemade matzo ball soup and was ready to celebrate. She was Catholic, not Jewish! Needless to say, we enjoyed a delicious and impromptu mini-Seder filled with laughter and neighborly kindness.

These little delights, the ones that might seem insignificant at first glance, are what joy is made of. They remind us to slow down, to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary, and to find joy in the unexpected. So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath and look around. The magic might be hiding in the song of a bird, a game of lizard tag, a kind gesture, or even a few lucky pennies under your doormat. Savor these moments, big or small, while they may pass. Y quickly, they hold nostalgic power and the ability to make us smile in their remembrance.
